Failure Analysis of Apennine Masonry Churches Severely Damaged during the 2016 Central Italy Seismic Sequence

This paper presents a detailed study of the damages and collapses suffered by various masonry churches in aftermath seismic sequence Central Italy 2016. The will first be analyzed then compared with numerical data obtained through 3D simulations eigenfrequency nonlinear static analyses (i.e., pushover). main purposes this are: (i) to create an adequately consistent sensitivity on several definite case studies obtain insight into role played geometry—which is always unique when referred churches—and irregularities; (ii) validate or address applicability limits more widespread approach, widely recommended Italian Technical Regulations. Pushover are conducted assuming that behaves as material different tensile compressive strengths. number investigated show how conventional approaches can identify, albeit qualitative way, most critical macro-elements usually trigger both global local collapses, underlining once again phenomena affected geometry stones bricks, texture wall face, irregularities plan elevation addition hypotheses made continuity between orthogonal walls.
